Learning Leadership Through Community: Reflections From the Scholars Council 2023

Sometimes, the most meaningful leadership experiences begin before we fully understand the responsibility we are stepping into.

In February 2023, I had the privilege of representing African Development University of Niger as a Scholars Representative at the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Council in Nairobi, Kenya.

At the time, this experience was more than just a gathering. It was an introduction to a broader understanding of leadership — one built not only on individual achievement, but on community, connection, and responsibility.

Throughout the council, I had the opportunity to engage with Scholars Representatives from different Mastercard Foundation partner universities, each bringing unique experiences, perspectives, and stories of impact. Listening to their journeys reminded me that leadership takes many forms and often begins with the simple decision to serve others.

One of the biggest lessons I carried from this experience was the importance of building sustainable relationships. A community is not created only through shared goals; it is built through trust, collaboration, and the willingness to support one another.
